Green As
by Jane Rouse
Recorded by Three Idle Women
I used to walk along that towpath looking at the pretty painted craft
I dreamed that I would live afloat one day, but that dream seemed so far away.
A romantic, a peaceful, idyllic way of life
I had no idea of what living on a boat would be like
I was as green as the plants I proudly arranged on my cabin top
Couldn’t steer the boat and I didn’t know how to work a lock
Things break and it often goes wrong
But my canal journey keeps moving on.
Dreams were big and my confidence high when I put in an offer on a run down boat
I dreamed of the renovations I could build but I didn’t have tools and my skills were limited
A kitchen, a bathroom, a bed for my head
I could picture what a wonderful home she could be
I was as green as the plants I proudly arranged on my cabin top
Couldn’t steer the boat and I didn’t know how to work a lock
Things break and it often goes wrong but my canal journey keeps moving on.
There was the time when I had a leak in the water tank and gallons of water
poured underneath the new floor
And another time I tried to moor up in a strong wind,
I was stood on the towpath but the boat was on the other side.
Now I’m chugging along the canals of England I stop when I see a nice place to moor
I’m part of a linear community and I’m living the dream I dreamed so long ago
There are bonfires, singing, home brewed wine what a rich and splendid life it turned out to be
I was as green as the plants I proudly arranged on my cabin top
I couldn’t steer the boat and I didn’t know how to work a lock
But now I’m not so green, just think of the places I have,
Sometimes I can even mend things when they go wrong
And my wonderful canal journey
Keeps moving on, moving on, moving on, moving on.
