Heading to the Water
by Martin Vogwell (2020)
I never was much good at staying in one place
There's always so much temptation to see another nation
So I'm packing up my bags
Shutting my front door I'm on my way
My oldest friend said to me
There must be more to life than this
So he proved it by moving so far away
He met a girl, got married
Made a new life in a new world
So I'm heading to the water
Leaving the land behind
Going with the flow and living in the wild
I'll see you again when the sky turns grey
But for now I'm just drifting
Now I'm just drifting away
If I had a chance to look back
At moments of reflection
I hope the land didn't mind
My moments of rejection
So I'm not going back
The water's in my blood
I'm here to stay
And I might be new to this life
But I've seen so much already
From the rivers and the valleys
To the stream in the sky
I'm lifted from the Weaver
I'm carrying on come what may
So I'm heading to the water
Leaving the land behind
Going with the flow and living in the wilds
I'll see you again when the sky turns grey
But for now I'm just drifting
Now I'm just drifting away (Repeat)
Martin Vogwell is a member of the folk-rock band Folklaw who were supposed to be playing at Cropedy Festival in
2020. The Covid pandemic caused the festival to be cancelled but Martin got fairly close with this performance of his
song about moving to live on the water which was filmed on the South Oxford Canal.
This song, with additional accompaniment, is the title track of an album Martin has recently recorded (Feb 2024).
Inspired by the UK Inland Waterways, Heading to the Water is available on bandcamp as a CD or digital download.
