Grantham Canal
The goddess of peace shall her blessings unfold,
Then open your treasures and pay down your gold,
Our trade it will flourish - then freemen be bold,
To finish our new navigation,
To finish the Grantham Canal.
'So sang the promoters of the Grantham Canal, on hearing that they had obtained their Act of Parliament
authorising them to raise money for there proposed waterway from Grantham to the Trent at West Bridgford,
Nottingham.'
Quote from 'Discovering Lost Canals' by Ronald Russell. Shire Publications (1975).
Only one verse is quoted in Russell's book so if anyone can help in finding any others I would be most grateful. More
information about this canal can be found on the Grantham Canal Society website.
