I am an honest toll clerk, a man of high renown
I live at Hawkesbury Junction, me name it is John Brown
When I gauge your boats the tolls you must agree
Well to pay for beer, I'm sitting here
With a blunderbuss on me knee!

Now don't give me no Tommy Note, nor promise in the cold
Pay me in silver coin, now I've weighed your load
To use our waterway you must reward me now
I earns me beer, sittin' here
With a blunderbuss on me knee

Don't try creepin' past me, all in the dead of night
For I will see you comin' with me candles bright
Then I'll make you wait until it's full daylight
With a jug of beer, I'm sitting here
With a blunderbuss on my knee

I get paid so well each week, you can't be bribing me
With tour coal, nor flour, not even a sack of tea
I've got a house and a garden and me wife looks after me
And I likes me beer, sittin' here
With a blunderbuss on my knee

I am a man of learnin' and you know me sums is right
So don't you go and argue, nor move as if to fight
Or I'll point me gun at you ... and blow you in the pound!
I've drunk a lot of beer, sittin' here
With a blunderbuss on me knee
